Cleanliness is next to godliness

Bish bash bosh. Done. Allahu Akbar…. sound familiar?

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فاغْسِلُواْ وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُواْ بِرُؤُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَينِ {O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles…} (al-Ma’idah, 5:6)

I came across the video below recently and it made me rethink something that I do everyday, Wudu (ablution). As a child, I was always told that wudu is also ibadah, a form of worship. That salat (prayer) begins at wudu and that it is the preparation needed to meet one’s Lord.

We live a very fast paced lifestyle when we often miss our salat, rush our wudu and fit all this in a busy schedule. What makes it worse is that we underestimate the power of these acts if done properly. Wudu isn’t just about being clean, if it was you’d think you would have to do a full blown ghusl before every salat, but due to some hikmah (wisdom/purpose) Allah swt has given the gift of wudu. Even from a scientific perspective,it was found that hand washing promotes optimism and is a cathartic action, resolving any negative feelings of anger. When one is anger, it is recommended to perform wudu in order to calm down.

The act of wudu is an ibadah, imagine every time you wash a part of your body, it is washing away the sins you may have committed of that one small organ. Your eyes may have seen something displeasing to Allah, your ears may have heard something displeasing to Allah, your feet may have taken you to somewhere displeasing to Allah. The act of washing is of a physical and spiritual purification. This is illustrated by the various duas (supplications) which are recommended to say at each stage. http://eshaykh.com/ibadat-worship/salat-prayer/wudu-steps/ << Link has some useful  supplications during each stage of wudu.

Our beloved SAW mentioned that wudu is a weapon of the believer, it is a protection, it is an ibadah and it is a purification.
